Twitter and Maritime Disasters

Loose Lips Sink Competitors

Competisaurus has just let the world know my secret techniques for predicting maritime disasters. Twitter Search is like sitting in a dockside bar listening to enemy sailors plot some dastardly attack. If you understand that competitive intelligence isn’t a guessing game like Battleship, then searching Twitter might help your marketing salvo sink a competitor’s Battleship. Now keep this to yourself, let it be our little secret.

The Twitter Threat

On the other hand, landlubbers at US Army intelligence wrote a report on the Twitter-threat. The report postulates that Twitter could be used for coordinating terrorist attacks. The report supposedly states, “Twitter was recently used as a counter-surveillance, command and control, and movement tool by activists at the Republican National Convention,”. “The activists would Tweet each other and their Twitter pages to add information on what was happening with Law Enforcement near real time.”

Must we tweet this Twitter-threat stuff seriously?

FireFox Addon - BugMeNot

BugMeNot

Registering to use a Web site is making a deal with the devil. Information such as your name, e-mail address, mailing address, phone number,etc.. This is followed by a tsunami of spam. Your name is sold for mailing lists and worse. But for many Web sites, if you don’t register, you can’t log in and use the site.

This add-on solves the problem. Go to a Web site, right-click in the user name or password field, and select BugMeNot. A valid user name and password will then be entered into the form. You can then use the site without having to register. This free add-on works in concert with the BugMeNot Web site, which has many user names and passwords for multiple sites.

Beyond Bizzarre - Teenage False Flag Assassination Operation

Boy, 14, ‘posed as female spy to arrange his own murder’

Saturday, 29 May 2004

A schoolboy posed as a female British secret service spy in an internet chatroom to persuade a friend to try to murder him, a court heard yesterday.

The boy, John, now 15, groomed a 16-year-old boy, Mark (both pseudonyms to protect the children), with an “elaborate matrix of deceit” involving six fictional characters in the MSN chatroom and correspondence totalling 56,000 lines of text.

The fictions created by John, then 14, convinced Mark that he was murdering someone who had a terminal brain tumour.

He was told that his reward would be money, a job as a British secret service agent and sex with the spy, whom he believed was a middle-aged woman.

In fact, John was determined to get himself killed

Mulitmedia Search Engines

I’ve been taking two search engines for finding audio, video, and images on test drives

Multimedia Search Engines

Most multimedia searching is done on metadata like the title, links, and web page text. Using speech-recognition, Everyzing  indexes words within audio and video files.

Trooker searches videos on CBC Video, YouTube, Myspace, Metacafe, Live Video, and more. It offers some useful features, but I don’t like the use of pop-up windows and Flash.

Assembling and Finishing the Standing Desk

Previous article

Putting it together

Drilling holes

Use a ⅜″ brad-point drill to make the clearance holes for the leg bolts. With only a hand-held power drill the bolt holes will never be straight. This is not a problem with a couple of bolts in place just re-drill  the holes that are crooked - problem solved.

To ensure that the leg does not protrude beyond the foot use a  shim under leg when you drill the holes. Use a square and level to make sure the leg and foot will be perpendicular when they are assembled.

The 1/4″ lag screws will require a 1/4″ clearance hole through the stringer and 3/16″ pilot holes in the legs. Drill the pilot holes first then the clearance hole. I suggest drilling these holes as you assemble the desk in place.

Dado & Rabbet Joint

The dado and rabbet joint may be made on a table saw or radial arm saw, but if you lack them use a simple hand powered mitre saw.  Use a sharp chisel to clean-up the joint surfaces.

Finish

I chose polyurethane varnish with an included oak stain. This required 5 coats to get a good finish. To apply this finish buy a 3″ and 1.5″ brushes designed for this type of varnish or the finish will be full of streaks and bubbles. Those cheap foam applicators won’t do the job.

Keyboard tray

I purchased a keyboard tray runners from Lee Valley Tools and a simple 16″ x 36″ pine panel from Home Depot.  Some sanding and varnish and it was ready. Only one thing - the Microsoft ergonomic keyboard was too high to slide under the desktop. I installed 3/4″ plywood spacers to drop the keyboard shelf and all was well again in my world.

Not enough room for the keyboard

3/4″ spacers added

Assemble in place

To assemble the desk,  I took the assembled legs into my office and then added the stringers. Using a square, I aligned the legs carefully and first drilled the pilot holes then the clearance holes in the stringers. With the 1/4″ lag bolts installed the base was ready.

I installed the keyboard tray on the underside of the desktop, then I aligned the desktop on the base. The top was secured using simple angle brackets and screws.

Avoid the Telemarketer’s Voice

An excellent little article about telephone interviewing suitable for any Investigator.

May favorite quote from the article:

Once people catch on that you are calling from a list of questions you fall into the only group of workers beneath used car salesmen and lawyers - the telemarketers.

Craigslist Search Engine

A new Craigslist search engine using a Google custom search has surfaced. Supposedly, that means no more searches using  site:craigslist.org “search terms”Search All Craig’s puts a convenient front end to a cross-city Craig’s search that uses Google on the back end.

I can’t really recommend this thing. If you do a search for the words toronto incall it returns only 2 hits. If you go to the Toronto erotic services section and do a search for  incall you get over 1200 results. The flaw is the rapid change that occurs on Craigslist and how Google updates its index. This isn’t the tool to use if you are looking for a telephone number used in a Craigslist ad. The search  site:craigslist.org “search terms” searches has the same flaw. However, in the case of site:craigslist.org toronto incall, this search string provided more results than Search All Craig’s (9 with this search and 2 with Search All Craig’s).

An Intellegence Revolution

I ‘m sometimes referred to dismissively as the Investigator who searches databases, or the guy who gets other people to do research and just manages the report writing (they can’t grasp the concept of a Project Manager). These people dinosaurs just don’t understand that the conduct of knowledge work has changed and that it will continue to change. Industrial technology brought about the Industrial Revolution, now information  technology is bringing about an Intelligence Revolution.

For example, the  news media acknowledged that Wikipedia was the clearing house for information about the Virginia Tech shooting. Over 8000 amendments to the Wikipedia article were posted in 2 weeks. A former director of the National Security Agency told  congress  in 2002, “Al-Qaida did not need to develop a telecommunication system. All it had to do was harvest the products of a three trillion dollar a year telecommunications industry; an industry that had made communications signals varied, global, instantaneous, complex, and encrypted.”

Open sources, open systems, and advanced telecommunications technology are changing how any form of intelligence collection and reporting is done. These developments have also changed how we have to look at the Intelligence Cycle. The decision-makers and intelligence professionals must now come together within the same space and time to focus on the target in a collaborative model using easily configurable open systems. ( An open system, in management science, is a system that is capable of self-maintenance on the basis of throughput of resources from the environment and usually operated on  a computer system that provides a  combination of interoperability, portability, and open software standards.)  In effect, contributors, analysts, and end-users must employ every tool available simultaneously. There is no time for the traditional Intelligence Cycle to function. Clark’s Intelligence Analysis: A Target-centric Approach and  the “fusion cells” in Iraq may offer models for this more focused, collaborative, and time-compressed intelligence process.

This presents management difficulties associated with the resistance to change, training, organisational structure, the introduction of new technology, and outsourcing. Contractors will collect and fact-check data before entering it into an open system for further processing. Portions of intelligence projects will be managed by outside contractors who compile data from many sources and then feed the results into the open system. Contractors will create chronologies, social network maps, link diagrams, and databases, all of which will be available through an open system. Everybody involved with collection will have some contact with the end user or project manager.

These changes are starting to happen in the public sector. If you do competitive intelligence or complex investigations in the private sector, then you need to start changing your work processes or be left behind by your competitors.  Adapt, or become a fossil.

Designing the Standing Desk

Preceding article

Tools

I designed the desk around the tools I had at hand. A small table saw, jig saw, drill, and router, along with a few hand tools.

Fasteners

This desk was designed around the fasteners. Screws don’t hold very well in end-grain. The 3½” long ⅜″ bolts hold the feet and desktop supports and  1/4″ lag screws go through a lap joint at the end of the stringer and into the leg through the dado rather than into the end-grain of the stringer. You will need ⅜″ and 1/4″ brad point drills for clearance holes and a 3/16″ for pilot holes for the lag screws.

Design

The Baltic Birch plywood comes in 5′ by 5′ sheets. The lumberyard cut this in half for me, but I later found it would have been better if desktop portion was 2″ wider. This would have left a nicer overhang of the feet and desktop supports.

From the smaller portion, cut eight 7½″ high pieces. These should then be cut to a pattern made from bristol board, like the one seen behind the router in the above picture, with a jigsaw or scroll saw. The best of these will become a template to make them all uniform size by using a template bit in your router. The edges that don’t contact the floor or desktop may then be rounded using a ⅜″radius bit.

These large feet and desktop supports will allow you some tolerance for uneven cuts or floors.

DIY Standing Desk

Preceding article

The Standing Desk

I started using a standing desk because sitting all day was causing back pain, but I have discovered that working at a standing desk makes me more alert and energetic. My early search for a standing desk that would support two screens and a keyboard was a dismal failure. The desks I found were far too expensive, poorly made, or configured improperly. This led me to design and construct my own.

Desk Height

The first task was to measure from the elbow to the floor with the forearm parallel to the floor. This is the minimum height of the desktop. I made mine ½″ higher than this; an inch higher would be too high.

The Wood

Next, I found a good lumberyard. I chose Baltic Birch plywood because it does not have voids within the plys. This does away with the need for veneer banding or a separate hardwood bull-nose. I used a ⅜″ radius router bit to round the edges. This leaves nice alternating dark and light bands on the edge. I chose Brazilian Oak for the legs and stringers because it was only $2.50 per board foot and the lumberyard would mill it to typical 2″x4″ dimensions and cut it to length.

FireFox Addon - CustomizeGoogle

CustomizeGoogle

This is a must-have add-on. It customizes Google in just about any way you could imagine and it will block Google’s ads as well as Google analytic cookies that invade your privacy. And most importantly for the Investigator, it anonymizes your Google user ID.

It adds links in your Google search results to other search engines, such as Yahoo and Ask.com, among others. It filters out search results from known spammers, and it will also let you customize features such as Gmail and Google News. If you want to customize the way Google works, make sure to download this one.

My favorite feature is the ability to set my Google preferences so they don’t disappear when I clear out the cookies.

Finding Usernames

Userrnamecheck  goes through many common social sites and searches for a particular handle or username. To make this site work you may need to use IE rather than Firefox.

Spokeo is a web tool that searches boards, conversations, social network sites, and forums. Unlike other people search engines that search for one person at a time, this thing searches for people contained within a your email address book. To do that, you must give them your email address and password for Spokeo to import your address book. Spokeo then looks for social network accounts for each person by performing searches across over 40 such networks. There are reports of this site using your address book to spam your contacts. Also, when you give over your email address and password to a site, you are giving it the authority to act as you. As far as Gmail or other email sever is concerned, there is no difference between the site you just gave your login details to and yourself.

The way to use this is to create a Gmail account with only one contact — the person you are looking for. Then change the password and delete the account. Another safer alternative is to submit the email address and name you are searching for as a CSV file. Spokeo will confirm the account by email. Once you have done the search, I would eliminate the Gmail account you used because the person you searched will probably receive a “courtesy” email (spam)  saying that someone has Spookeoed him and that he should sign up to learn more. This is Spokeo’s growth strategy.

However, this thing is effective, but it must be used with great care.

Copyright as an Asset - Canada

In Canada, one does not have to register your copyright to have protection, but when you register with the Copyright Office, you receive a certificate which can be used to your advantage in the event that your work is infringed. Formal registration of a work is not required. An author or the author’s employer usually enjoys copyright protection automatically on creation of the work.

Registration of a copyright is done by completing an application and sending it to the Copyright Office. A copy of the work is not sent along with application. Under the Library and Archives of Canada Act, two copies of every book published in Canada, and one copy of every sound recording manufactured in Canada that has some Canadian content must be sent to the National Library and Archives within one week of publication.

Craiglist Ad for Bank Robbery Accomplice

Now I know that Craigslist is good for a lot of things but this is novel:

Armored truck robber uses Craigslist to make getaway

“I came across the ad that was for a prevailing wage job for $28.50 an hour,” said Mike, who saw a Craigslist ad last week looking for workers for a road maintenance project in Monroe.

He said he inquired and was e-mailed back with instructions to meet near the Bank of America in Monroe at 11 a.m. Tuesday. He also was told to wear certain work clothing.

“Yellow vest, safety goggles, a respirator mask…and, if possible, a blue shirt,” he said.

Mike showed up along with about a dozen other men dressed like him, but there was no contractor and no road work to be done. He thought they had been stood up until he heard about the bank robbery and the suspect who wore the same attire.

Due Diligence and Decison-making Behaviour

Due Diligence (DD) research provides more than protection from criminal behaviour. It helps you understand how the other party makes decisions and behaves in a variety of situations.

For example, if you find the other party has been sued, you will want to know how they responded. If the other party was a judgement debtor, then you need to know how they dealt with the judgement — did they pay, appeal, negotiate a settlement, or avoid paying through procrastination or deceit?

DD research also helps you understand the key decision-makers. You will know their employment history and educational background. You will know how the key stakeholders view their behaviour. If they have published articles and other writings you will have read what they have written. Learning these things may change your opinion about the other party’s ability to perform what they undertake.

If you find a lot of derogatory data that your fact checking proves erroneous, then you must ask what steps to correct this data has the other party taken. If they didn’t know about the erroneous data, then they must not value their reputation, and perhaps they care even less for yours.
