BoB is short for Bug-out Bag. BoB will help you Get Out Of Dodge (G.O.O.D.) fast. The Toronto propane explosion should be a strong reminder that we have to look after ourselves when things become chaotic. Running out of the house in pajamas and slippers is not a good survival strategy.
It doesn’t take much to have an inexpensive but rugged day pack in the front hall closet along with a pair of good boots and socks. Good boots are perhaps the most important item. When the White House was evacuated on 9/11, the area was littered with shoes that came off as people fled. If you can’t walk, then you can’t get away from the danger.
Water, food, a good knife & multi-tool, flashlight & candle lantern, clothing & rain gear, first-aid supplies, and maps should reside in BoB. Medications, money, ID, and important documents should be organised nearby for a quick getaway. This should get you through 3 or 4 days.
If you travel by car a lot, then a BoB clone should reside in your car. The same applies to your office if possible. My briefcase contains a mini-BoB.
A few more things for a good bugout bag:
Baggies and tupperware – when you’re mobile for days it’s amazingly useful to have ways to store little bits of stuff. You should also include some plain old plastic grocery bags, perhaps as packing for something else.
P-38 can opener – amazingly handy, from opening cans to opening boxes, to serving as a miniature screwdriver. An they’re TINY and cost less than a buck.
Sierra Club cups (old style) – These can be used for a hundred purposes, they’re light, and doggone near indestructible. Get two or more, even if you think that you’ll be solo.
Oversized (32″ by 32″ or larger) bandanas – These can be used as bags, hats, bandages, ways to tie things up, and on and on. When I was a kid we were taught to call these “a.p.s” for “all-purpose”.
A towel, or two – Douglas Adams was right; towels are good as everything from pillows to scarves to wound compresses. If you can bring several, then do.
Small, inexpensive toys – even if you don’t have kids, in a real extended emergency, at some point you will be dealing with kids and they’ll probably be on the edge of panic.
Other small, light, useful things you can share or give away, such as a few extra LED flashlights, dried fruit, or basic multitools. The dollar store is the place to stock up on most of this, though bringing ten or fifteen extra P-38s is a great option, too.
