Another Face filter

First Exalead adds a face filter, then Google, and now Live Search has jumped on the same band-wagon.

Add filter:face or filter:portrait to your search search strategy to get the face-filter results.

Image Searches

We now have four reasonably efficient image search engines:
Yahoo Images, Google Image Search, Microsoft Images, Ask Images

The problem with all image search strategies is the reliance upon tags and descriptions of the the images. A good image search must allow the use of related terms, not just search the caption or tag information attached to the image alone.

If you are looking for a person, then a search by his or her name may not find anything. The use of other terms associated with the person may yield better results. After some trial and error we have found the following search strategies work best when looking for pictures of people.

Yahoo

This includes Flikr images & tags. The best search strategy seems to be searching without quotations for name & related terms.

Google

Search the person’s name & related terms in quotations for best results.

Microsoft

Search all terms without quotes.

Ask

This searches picture captions only.

Power User 107 – MS Word

If you must use Word, then get what some users are calling the “Word Sanity Package” – a collection of utilities that address Word’s most irritating shortcomings:

* Payne Numbering Assistant – replaces Word’s utterly mystifying auto-numbering/outlining system with an interface that makes it actually work the way people expect it to.

* Metadata Assistant – a must-have for every Word user. Removes Metadata from outbound Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. Also lets you view all the Metadata contained in documents you receive.

* Levit & James CrossEyes – similar to WordPerfect’s Reveal Codes for Word. This is a real time-saver as it let’s you “look under the hood” of your documents to find and resolve problems.

* CrossFingers from Levit & James – repairs corrupted Word files. Unfortunately, this tool is needed more often than it should be.

* Stylizer from Levit & James – conforms internally generated and externally received documents to your standard styles. It reduces the time wasted by Word documents others send to you that contain messed up styles that begin to infiltrate and ruin your internal document base.
